Taxman's Mapeley Deal was
a step in the right direction

This week, shadow chancellor Oliver Letwin has been promising to cut
�35bn in public spending if the Conservatives win the next general election. At
the same time, a leak suggests that the Treasury's adviser Sir Peter Gershon
has said that 80,000 government jobs can go. In both cases, the cuts would
be made through 'efficiency' savings and as property forms such a huge cost for the
public sector, it is likely to form a key part of both sets of plans.

Last year Bradford Metropolitan Borough Council decided to parcel up several
properties and rationalise its estate by forming a partnership with a
developer-investor. It�s the first deal of its kind, and it is now crucial to
Bradford�s chances of attracting government offices. The shortlist of three,
Land Securities Trillium, Mapeley and Carillion, will be reduced to one with a
decision expected in May. The landmark partnership has had the shortlisted
candidates buzzing with activity to woo the council.
